A grandma’s love

A mother, Athini, shared photos of her son before and after he visited grandma in the village. The before pictures showed the boy in his fabulous outfits and cool accessories, and the after pictures in the village showed the boy in his most unrecognisable form, dressed like a shepherd.

The mother could not believe her eyes when he visited her family in the village and saw how foreign her son looked, dressed in raggedy clothes. The boy is seen unbothered, playing in the yard.

Expert shares importance of a relationship between grandkids and grandparents

Neuroscience coach Candice Lambert indicated that grand parents help bring about identity and belonging.

"It's important for grandparents’ involvement in their grandkids’ lives. They bring a traditional, steady sense of identity and belonging to the family and their grandkids. It’s equally important for kids to interact with their grandparents communicating what they are learning about and what the world is saying. Almost as if there is a bottom up and top down approach to connecting and relationship building."

Since times have changed and everything is fast-paced, having the presence of a grandparent contributes to a strong sense of self.

"We are living in very face-paced times and creating a steady sense of self in the process is not only critical, but it is becoming increasingly difficult. When we talk about building resilience in children, we talk about building protective factors for and in them as internal and external resources they can draw from during difficult times. Diversity in generation falls into this category as well as healthy debate and conversation to sharpen their ideas of values and what makes sense for the family. This little boy dressing differently since going to his grandmothers house is so sweet and it encourages this sense of belonging and the idea of being seen and heard by someone." she emphasised.
