EXPERT SHARES TRICKS TO KEEP DOGS OUT OF THE TRASH

Dogs are naturally curious creatures, but their love for exploring can sometimes lead them to rummage through the trash can, creating a mess and potentially ingesting harmful substances.

This behavior can be frustrating for pet owners. Even worse, it can lead to garbage toxicosis, or ‘garbage gut’. This potentially fatal condition occurs when dogs ingest harmful substances from trash, leading to symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, and even seizures.

But fear not – there are effective strategies to prevent your furry friend from indulging in this undesirable and dangerous habit. Brian McDaid, from Eagle Dumpster Rental, reveals his expert tips to keep your pup away from the garbage and your home clean.

Secure Trash Can

One of the most effective ways to keep your dog out of the trash is to invest in a secure trash can with a lid that locks or is heavy enough for your pet to be unable to open.

This simple solution can prevent access to the tempting contents inside.

Keep Trash Out of Reach

If a secure trash can is not an option, consider keeping your trash can in a closed cabinet or pantry, where your dog cannot access it. This method eliminates the temptation altogether.

Use Deterrents

Bitter sprays or motion-activated alarms can be effective deterrents for dogs who are persistent in their trash-raiding attempts. “These products create an unpleasant yet harmless experience for your pet, discouraging them from repeating the behavior,” Brian explains.

Reinforce Positive Behavior

Positive reinforcement is a powerful tool in training. Reward your dog with treats or praise when they avoid the trash can, reinforcing the desired behavior.

Supervision and Redirection

When your dog is near the trash can, supervise them closely and redirect their attention to a more appropriate activity or toy. This proactive approach can prevent unwanted behavior before it occurs.

Brian says, “Dogs can develop habits quickly, so it’s crucial to nip this behavior in the bud. Consistent training and management strategies are key to keeping your furry friend out of the trash, to keep them safe and maintain a clean, safe environment for both you and your pet.”
