HOW TO CLEAN FLUFFY SLIPPERS WITHOUT DAMAGING THEM

As the weather gets colder, many of us are reaching for our fluffy slippers. Here are tips on how to clean your fluffy slippers without damaging their shape or soft feel.

Wool slippers: Cleaning tips

A quality pair of wool slippers is a great addition to any winter wardrobe. They are pricey, so making them last, is important for many people. Wool, especially when it’s white, can become dirty quickly.

Steps:

  1. Use a dry, soft-bristled brush (like an old toothbrush) or a cloth to loosen any dirt.
  2. Mix warm water with a few drops of dish soap in a small bowl.
  3. Dampen a cloth with the soapy water and gently spot clean any stains on the slippers. Make sure to wring out the cloth well to avoid making the slippers too wet.
  4. Afterwards, let the slippers air dry. Tumble dryers can cause them to shrink or lose their shape. For that reason, it is best to avoid using a tumble dryer to dry them.

How to clean synthetic or fabric slippers

Steps:

  1. Use a soft-bristled brush or cloth to brush off any dirt or grime from the soles of the slippers. Alternatively, you can use baby wipes instead of a cloth.
  2. Using your finger or a soft-bristled brush, gently massage a dab of mild liquid laundry detergent into the stains and let it stand for about 10 minutes.
  3. Wash the slippers in a washing machine on a cold, gentle cycle, unless the washing instructions on the slippers say otherwise.
  4. Air dry the slippers afterwards.

Spotless suede

Suede slippers are somewhat trickier to clean compared to other types of slippers.

Steps:

  1. Use a suede brush or soft cloth to brush off any dirt from the suede slippers.
  2. For fresh stains on the slippers, generously cover them with cornstarch. The cornstarch will help to absorb any oils from the stain. After a few minutes, wipe away the cornstarch with a clean cloth and repeat this until the stain is gone.

If the cornstarch method does not work, consider using a suede cleaner. The suede cleaner will come with instructions.

Alternatively, for extra-stubborn stains, apply a small amount of white vinegar. Unlike water, small amounts of white vinegar shouldn’t stain or damage your slippers. Dip a clean cloth into white vinegar, and gently rub the stained area with it.

For fur-lined suede slippers, sprinkle baking soda inside and leave it for several hours to absorb any odours. Then, use the handheld extension of a vacuum cleaner to clean it up.
