A family in Siaya county has thrown a lavish party for their dear mum, who sadly lost her mother a week before her birthday in 2023.

Family celebrates birthday after gran's death

According to her daughter Diana Sheilla Akinyi, they lost her grandmother on March 29, 2023, after a tough battle with cancer.

"My mum was supposed to celebrate her birthday on 6 April , and since planning for the funeral took centre stage, we could not, in good faith, celebrate her birthday," Diana said.
"Throughout the year, I felt bad because my mum's only memory of her birthday was that she had lost a loving mother, and that did not sit well with me. So I took it upon myself (with help of course), to plan a surprise birthday this year. Given that we were all gathering to celebrate my grandmother's death anniversary, I decided to kill two birds with one stone," she added.

Diana's mum learns of surprise

The larger family has a group of her cousins. Initially, it started as sisters, but uncles joined in because it brought them together.

They were present during Diana's mum's funeral, and she asked them to help her plan the surprise.

The family first celebrated their grandmother's first death anniversary, and the following day, they celebrated the party of Diana's mum.

"For her, she thought it was a normal Sunday gathering, and convincing my mum to wear her nice dress was not a walk in the park. She is the type of person to dress up for the occasion. To pull off the perfect surprise, we had to rope in my brother to take her 'out' on a drive," said the loving daughter.
"Again, she would ask, you don't want me to help you? The minute she left, we had everything in order; people changed into the agreed dress code, and we assigned a DJ, a photographer and a videographer. Thank you, cousins, for taking up the task, I know it wasn't easy," she added.

Hilarious moment as cake gets 'lost'

The cake had to be hidden in a woman identified as Nyagot's house not to raise suspicion.

Since everyone had their assigned chore, Diana forgot where she had hidden the cake, and given the runaround of the day, the young lady also forgot where they had hidden it.

"Now to the part where we receive the birthday girl. Let me tell you, this was not easy, we had to wait for my mum and brother to return. I couldn't call him or the surprise would be ruined. After a long wait, our guest of honour arrived just when we almost got tired of waiting," she said.
"She was shocked and had to be told that we were beginning her birthday celebrations a week earlier. That was when the personality kicked in; baby girl danced and laughed. It was a joy to see my mum smile and enjoy this beautiful moment with those who are near and dear to her," she added.

Although Diana's mum is still grieving and dealing with the loss, she is still a happy daughter who got to put a smile on her face.

"To everyone who made the birthday a success, I am forever grateful," she said.
