THE PROS AND CONS OF HEATED FLOORS

Thinking of installing heated floors? Here are the pros and cons of heated floors.

What exactly are heated floors?

There are two types of heated flooring systems: electric wires and hot water pipes installed underneath the floors to provide warmth.

Homeowners often choose to install heated floors in bedrooms, living rooms, and kitchens – areas where they spend a lot of time. Since underfloor heating works from the ground up, it ensures more even heat distribution in the room.

Eskom warns that underfloor heating is not the most effective way to heat your home as the floor must be heated before the temperature influences the warmth of the room. Also, the warm air continues to rise to the ceiling. So, in homes without roof insulation, underfloor heating will be very ineffective.

While having heated floors is a luxurious treat for many, there are certain advantages and disadvantages. Here are some of the pros and cons of heated floors.

The pros

1. Easy installation

Electric flooring heating systems are so easy to install that with the right tools and experience you can do it yourself. However, if you would rather be on the safe side, there are many professionals who can do it for you. They can be installed under almost any flooring type.

2. Low or no maintenance

Floor heating systems do not require major maintenance. Most will last for 20+ years without any issues. In case of any damage, thermal imaging cameras can be used to easily and quickly find the problem. If installed by a professional, the chances of cable issues are minimal.

3. Energy-efficient heating

Heated floors are one of the most energy-efficient ways to heat your home. This is because the heat is evenly distributed throughout the room, so there is no need to overheat the room to compensate for cold spots. You can also turn down the temperature when you are not using the room, causing less energy consumption.

The cons

1. Expensive heating

Although heated flooring may save you money in the long run, it is expensive to install. The installation price depends on the system you choose, room size, and the installer’s fee. Also, floor heating may increase your electricity bill significantly. Floor heating is an investment, but for many, it is a question of comfort and luxury.

2. Replacement of flooring

As heated flooring systems need to be installed under the flooring, you will have to replace your existing flooring. Many people opt for tiles as they conduct heat distribution very well.
