Is a coffee and coconut oil scrub effective?

Medical doctor Azhar Bassardien told Briefly News that ground coffee (not instant coffee) is an exfoliant that helps remove surface dirt and skin. When used, it can provide mild and temporary lightening effects.

"People with sensitive skin should be careful not to overuse it as this can cause inflammation, irritation and possibly infection."

The Cape Town-based doctor adds:

"Both coconut oil and coffee (specifically the compounds within coffee beans) have shown to help reduce inflammation and redness, and helps retain moisture in the skin, especially in those suffering from atopic dermatitis."

Regarding the stretch marks Mbali mentioned, Dr Bassardien explains that these occur due to underlying damage and are difficult to treat.

"While many skin creams and treatments claim to reduce stretch marks, there is no evidence to suggest that coffee and coconut oil will help reduce their appearance."
