WHAT IS THE MOST POPULAR BABY NAME IN YOUR AREA?

Ever wondered how common your name is?

Well, now you can find out.

MailOnline has today created a search tool that shows exactly how many boys and girls born over the last 30 years share your name.

As well as showing the absolute number, it illustrates whether it has become more – or less – popular over time.

The most popular baby names in all 330-plus of England and Wales' authorities are also today revealed in interactive maps.

Noah – officially the most common boy's name – tops the chart for around 75 local authorities, while Muhammad topped 45 and Oliver 24.

For girls, Olivia claimed the top spot, with 69 local authorities championing the name, followed by Amelia in 42 and Isla in 30.

Olivia dominated across the varying age groups of mothers, too, taking the most popular name in three out of four age demographics (25-29, 30-34 and over-35).

Noah, meanwhile, came top in just one demographic, under-25, with Muhammad scoring higher in both 25-29 and over-35, while 30-34 year-olds preferred the name Oliver.

Only 35 different boys' names featured in the Office for National Statistics (ONS) borough-by-borough rankings, compared to 58 for girls.

In terms of boys, Osian (joint top in Carmarthenshire) and David (Harrow) featured in the list.

Several boroughs have clearly felt the pull of the celebrity world when choosing their baby names in 2022, data suggests.

Pop superstar Dua Lipa has taken the Greater Manchester borough of Oldham by storm as the joint top girls' baby name for 2022 (12).

The 28-year-old, who boasts seven Brit Awards and three Grammys, was born in London’s West Hampstead area to Kosovo-Albanian parents.

Dua, originating from the Arabic word for ‘prayer’, first showed up in the ONS’ annual figures in 1999, with three children across England and Wales given the name.

Its popularity grew modestly but remained in single figures until 2005 when it hit 13 across England and Wales, then leaping to 115 in 2018. That year marks the release of her mega-hit One Kiss with DJ Calvin Harris, the best-selling song of 2018.

Since then, the popularity of the name has only grown, with 322 girls called Dua in 2022.

Meanwhile, Australian box office phenomenon Margot Robbie appears to have been a particular hit in the ceremonial East Midlands county of Rutland.

Five girls in the area were given the same name as the Barbie and Wolf of Wall Street stunner in 2022, with 810 in England and Wales overall for the year.

Robbie’s major breakthrough came alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in Martin Scorsese’s 2013 hit The Wolf of Wall Street.

And the data show the bump of the film’s release on naming habits, with babies named Margot nearly doubling year-on-year from 55 in 2013 to 104 in 2014.

For 2022, there were 810 babies born and named Margot, the second highest total ever behind 2021’s 892.

Dr Rebecca Gregory, assistant professor of historical linguistics and onomastics at the University of Nottingham, told MailOnline that the pull of naming children after well-known figures dates back centuries.

‘We can start tracing this trend around the 16th century when church records come into circulation; whether it’s a local figure or a member of the Royal Family, people have always named children after influential people,’ she said.

Where in bygone eras, the lord of the manor or duchess might get the nod, people nowadays look to stage, screen and sports for inspiration.
